SPAN Family and Study Centre is a friendly and welcoming centre where adults and children can access high quality learning opportunities, individual support and meet people from many different cultures and backgrounds. We are based at the Silai Centre in the Easton/Lawrence Hill area of Bristol.
SPAN Family & study Centre is a local project managed by Single Parent Action Network – a Bristol based national network that work to empower and engage disadvantaged one parent families living in poverty and isolation.
Historically our project was created to support single parents overcoming barriers to accessing training, volunteering and employment opportunities. However, over the years we have opened up our services to other parents and adults who also face barriers to accessing these opportunities through mainstream services. 60 percent of everybody who come to our centre are single parents and 70 percent have English as an additional language. What they all have in common is that they want to learn, achieve their goals and aspiration and create a good future for themselves and their children.
What we do
At our centre adults and children can access a range of activities and learning opportunities, including:
– Adult education courses supported by crèche provision
– Early years education
– Parenting programmes
– 1:1 support and information through our parent support workers, which includes a dedicated fathers worker and a Somali speaking member of staff.
– Social event and activities
– Volunteering opportunities and work placements
– Capacity building and support to small informal self-help family groups
– Training for professionals working with parents
– Work with the SPAN Network bringing voices from the grassroots to decision-making arenas.
To offer a high quality service, we work in partnership with a wide range of other organizations, including Silai for Skills, City of Bristol College, Hillcroft College, Bristol City Council, Learning Curve, Bristol University and many local schools and early years settings.

How you can support us
We always welcome support from dedicated and generous individuals, businesses and other groups. We offer volunteering placements for people who want to build their skills, but are also keen to involve people with particular skills that they can share.
At the Silai Centre there are various opportunities to become a volunteer. Volunteering will allow you to gain practical experience in a work place, get references and contribute to the success of a great community project!
Opportunities available in September:
– Parent Support
Where possible, we encourage you to attend training in your chosen area so that you can continue to develop your skills and knowledge.
If you want to volunteer, you will have to commit to at least 3 hrs per week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
