2013 has been a particularly busy time for policy & Parliamentary work
The charity have responded to two Government consultations, one calling on the Government to improve the way that statistics are kept on single parents receiving sanctions and the second to retain and improve the public sector equality duty so that services better reflect the needs of single parents and their children.
We have tabled an amendment to the Children and Families Bill (PDF Download) to open up the right to request flexible employment from day one of employment. Our amendment and briefing was supported by the following organisations Bliss, Family Lives, Fatherhood Institute, TAMBA, Fawcett, 4children , The Mothers Union, Parenting across Scotland, UNISON, Women’s Budget Group, and Working Families.
We provided input into the Fawcett Society report: The changing labour market: delivering for women, delivering for growth’ calling for Government action to improve employment prospects for women. Our research is quoted extensively in the report and they have taken forward a number of our ideas for change. We are speaking at the launch of the report in Parliament

What we do
Since 1990, SPAN has been working in the UK and Europe to improve Government policies that affect one-parent families. We do this by giving a voice to all single parents, but particularly those from diverse cultures and backgrounds living in poverty and isolation.
Involvement of single parents at every level of our policy and research work ensures that participation is at the heart of what we do. The Policy and Research Team works to:
- increase understanding of the complex needs of one-parent families and the policies that best support them
- empower single parents to have a say
- influence national and local policy makers
We do this by:
- Carrying out and publishing participatory research in partnership with other NGOs and universities
- Delivering training on policy and research to single parents
- Responding to Government consultations
- Lobbying key parliamentarians
